Social Outreach

Dr. Daphne Pillai has always been a champion of social and community service and believes in “giving back to society” in a sustainable manner. She is well travelled and has a deep understanding of the socio-economic issues affecting women and girls. She leads the Community Service Intiatives of Mahatma Education Society including the celebration of Community Service Day by all the institutions of the Pillai Group.

Dr. Daphne Pillai firmly maintains that channelization of a collective force of women can work wonders for society. She got the opportunity to espouse this when she was introduced to the Soroptimist movement and was drawn to the various causes that they represent. This led her to start the Soroptimist International Bombay Chembur (SIBC) Club in Mumbai in the year 1997 with a dedicated group of women in various streams of education. The Club is affiliated to Soroptimist International; a women’s organization which has consultative status in the United Nations.

She has initiated and implemented several projects for the upliftment of women including Adult Literacy Drives for women in slums. SIBC under her able leadership and guidance continues to help many women along the way to aspire, achieve and enrich their lives.

Dr. Daphne Pillai was awarded the SI- Achiever Award by National Association of Soroptimist International in December, 2012 for her exemplary work in the field of women welfare and development.

She was also the recipient of the Savvy Honors Celebrating Success Award in 2016.

She was selected to represent SIGBI at the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women (CSW 62 ) at the United Nations Headquarters in New York in March, 2018 where she spoke on ‘Challenges and Opportunities in Achieving in Gender Equality and Empowerment of Rural Girls’ and gave an India perspective.
